A Beauty Queen Legacy: Thomasians Shine in Miss Manila ‘14 By James Gideon Tinsay on July 8, 2014
THE beauty queen legacy of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) lives on as two Thomasians garnered top spots in the Miss Manila 2014 held last June 24 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Plenary Hall.
Joining in the roster of beauty queens are 24-year-old incoming 3rd year medicine student from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (UST-Med) Krischelle Halili, crowned as Miss Manila 2014, and 3rd-runner-up Kayesha Clauden Chua, a Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) graduate from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM).
In two separate online interviews, the two recalled how UST has helped them in their beauty queen journey.
Thomasian Experience
Halili said that she gained her confidence to join national pageants due to her prior experience in UST, as she was previously hailed as Thomasian Ambassadress for Marine Life, representing UST-Med in UST Central Student Council’s Resiklo 2013: The Search for Thomasian Ambassadors for Nature.
“When I joined Binibini (Bb. Pilipinas 2014), the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery was very supportive and allowed me to make up for all my classes,” Halili said.
Meanwhile, Chua said that she is proud to say that it is in UST where she started her beauty queen career from being a representative of CTHM in the university-wide pageant, The Search for Ideal Thomasian Personalities 2011 (TSITP 2011) during her sophomore year.
“In every pageant, I couldn’t help but recognize UST and what the institution has done for me,” she said. “It has molded me to become a more confident and smart woman of not only beauty, but of character as well,” Chua explained.
The two seemed to have a hint of their fate in the pageant. Halili was eagerly hopeful in winning the title. “My hopes were high for the crown, especially [when] I was one of the girls who were told to be “the favorites” during our press conference on June 9 at Diamond Hotel,” she shared.
On the other hand, Chua was contented on whatever God would bestow upon her. “I never asked for the crown. My prayer was for Him to give me what is due and I will accept it with all my heart,” she said.
“Reluctant latecomers”
Interestingly, the two Thomasian beauty queens both admitted that they had a short notice of the pageant. Halili learned of Miss Manila a day before the final screening while Chua knew of it on the night before the deadline of applications.
At first, the two were reluctant about joining the competition. Halili joined due to a friend’s advice. “I first wanted to just be part of the working committee, but my friend encouraged me to join first then work with the organizers next year,” she narrated.
Meanwhile, Chua said that she was driven to join by the contest’s aim to build dialysis centers. “My dad has been going through dialysis for quite a long time now. I know the feeling of uncertainty; I don’t want other people to feel the same, most specially those who have less,” she said.
Sibling relationship
Halili and Chua treated each other like siblings in the pageant and shared a mutual admiration for each other.
Chua is amazed of her “Ate KC” on how she was able to answer any question asked at her. “I told myself that I will be happy for the on who’ll get the title. But when it was Ate KC who got it, I felt a little more than happy since she is a fellow Thomasian,” she said.
Halili said that Chua (or “Kaye” as she calls her) was very sweet and was like a little sister to her. “Kaye is pageant-ready even at a young age. She’s definitely going to bloom some more and improve in time for when she joins the nationals,” she said.
Inspiring words
Like any other beauty queens, the two Miss Manila victors also desire to be an inspiration to beauty queen aspirants.
Halili hopes that the crown she added to UST’s legacy would inspire ladies in and out the campus to exude the beauty they are already born with.
“The road to any crown is not easy. But if you work and pray hard for it, it can happen. Remember though that a crown puts you in a position of power. So, use such power to change lives,” Halili said.
For Chua, one must not stop in chasing the crown. “Like what I always say, as long as there is this one person who believes in you, you don’t stop, you keep on going,” she said.
“Just keep your relationship with God as solid and as close as possible and he’ll surely show you the way. Most of all, once you wear that crown, never forget the people who helped you on your way. Always be grateful, always give thanks,” Chua added.
