A leap higher than the rest By Krista Rodriguez |Philippine Daily Inquirer4:50 am | Saturday, August 24th, 2013Bright-eyed, bubbly and very talented, Carla Piscoso is what every cheerleader should be, and more. With a burning passion for dancing, Carla has devoted much of herself into developing her skills in this craft. This led her to join the University of Santo Tomas’ (UST) UAAP cheerdance team, Salinggawi Dance Troupe. This morena beauty began dancing hip-hop in high school. In college, Carla continued dancing, but at the same time she wanted to try something new. HER INVOLVEMENT with Salinggawi is not only a matter of dedication, it is also a matter of duty. PHOTO BY TOFF TIOZONFortunately, UST had the perfect answer: the Salinggawi Dance Troupe. Not only does the team offer cheerleading, it also enables its members to try different dance genres such as hip-hop, jazz, folk dance and ballet. A cheerleading team that competes, Salinggawi trains every day, more so now that the UAAP Cheerdance Competition is set in a few weeks. “We do cardio, toning, gymnastics, dance, lifting and stunts as well,” Carla says. Sacrifices Her involvement is not only a matter of dedication, it is also a matter of duty. It also entails losing and sacrificing other important things. Carla admits that being a Salinggawi cheerdancer means that she should be willing to make sacrifices without a feeling of regret. As she gives more and more of her time to her squad, she loses valuable time with family and loved ones. Yet, she knows that in the end, her hard work, dedication and commitment will ultimately shape her as an athlete and as a person, while strengthening the squad that is dear to her heart. “I truly believe that all my sacrifices for Salinggawi will be worth it and because of that, I don’t regret anything at all,” says Carla. To Carla, cheerleading is definitely the gift that keeps on giving. Of late, many brands have been drawn to the grace and athleticism of women athletes. Indeed, cheerleading does not end at rousing the crowd to rally behind its team; it also opens doors to different opportunities, especially for someone as gifted as Carla. Still humbleAmid the praises heaped on her, however, Carla remains humble, genuine and cheerful. Her determination, dedication, talent and fresh face will certainly take Carla to greater heights—higher than her cheerleading leaps and jumps. PH bet finishes in Top 10 of Miss Tourism Queen Int'l ABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 10/04/2013 12:22 AM | Updated as of 10/04/2013 11:41 AM
MANILA (UPDATED) -- The representative of Latvia to the 8th Miss Tourism Queen International (TQI) pageant was crowned the winner on Thursday night in Xianning, China, with the Philippines' Cindy Miranda finishing in the Top 10.
In a statement given to ABS-CBNnews.com early Friday, BPCI announced the Top 10 finish of Miranda, after initial difficulties in confirming the results of the pageant.
It earlier posted on its Facebook page that Miranda herself confirmed the news, as there was no online broadcast of the coronation night from its venue in China.
Noting the back-to-back victories of Filipinas in pageants this year, BPCI said it "proudly congratulates Bb. Pilipinas Tourism Miss Cindy Miranda for reaping yet another pageant honor for the Philippines by placing among the top ten finalists of the just-concluded Miss Tourism Queen International 2013," it said.
Mutya Datul won Miss Supranational last September 7, while Megan Young bagged the first-ever Miss World title for the Philippines last Saturday.
Before leaving for China, Miranda said she was aiming to bring home the Philippines' third crown from an international pageant in 2013.
"I'm not just gunning for the crown," she said. "I want to bring home the title to give pride to the country, especially with all the calamities and problems the country is facing now."
The Philippines will be sending candidates to at least two more international pageants this year. Binibining Pilipinas 2013 winner Ariella Arida will be competing in Miss Universe in November, while Bea Rose Santiago is one of the candidates in Miss International in December.
BPCI, in its statement, also said it "enjoins Filipinos around the world to continue supporting" Arida and Santiago in their respective beauty contest bids.
