Thomasian siblings...Beauty queen’s daughter is Miss UST High School (The Philippine Star) | Updated February 16, 2013 - 12:00am
MANILA, Philippines - Beauty runs in the family. Newly-crowned Miss UST High School Therese Mandanas Gaston, 16, is the daughter of 1984 Mutya ng Pilipinas-Asia Pacific Aurora Mandanas-Gaston. The coronation was held last Feb. 11 during the High School Week of the Pontifical/Royal University of Santo Tomas. Runners-up were Coleen San Pedro and Ritchie Boncan, while Rean Berdijo (second from left) was named Mr. Ideal Young Thomasian Personality. Therese, who stands 5’9”, is a scholar and member of the volleyball team. — Reported by CELSO DE GUZMAN CAPARAS
www.philstar.com/entertainment/2013/02/16/909313/beauty-queens-daughter-miss-ust-high-schoolVolleybelle Daughter of a beauty queen, volleyball player, model and a student—Pauline Gaston has lots of things going on for her By Daryl Angelo Baybado Philippine Daily Inquirer 2:19 am | Saturday, February 1st, 2014
High school life is tough, but student-athlete-model Pauline Gaston says you can lick it as long as you believe in yourself. Blessed with beauty and brains, this 5’8”-tall girl shows how a teenager can deal with the rigors of academics and have fun at the same time.
Pauline is a junior at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Pay High School and a member of the UST Girls Volleyball Team. At 16, she has played for three UAAP seasons, two Shakey’s Girls Volleyball leagues, and has walked for fashion shows of designers like Albert Andrada and Joey Espino, as well as with clothing brand Penshoppe.
Pauline was raised by a beauty queen mother and a sports official father in Parañaque. Growing up, her sister Therese described her as a tomboy who became lady-like only when she reached 14.
In Saint Pedro Poveda, Pauline started liking to play volleyball. When she moved to UST, she got serious with the sport.
Passion
She was in Grade 6 when her sister Therese first invited her to join the volleyball team in Poveda. Pauline decided to move to UST Pay High School hoping to participate in its volleyball program. At that time, Therese was already a member of the UST volleyball team.
Pauline narrated the difficulty of being a rookie. She was always reminded of her sister’s advice. “My sister always tells me never to complain because she’s been through with what I was experiencing,” Pauline recalled.
Now on her third year with the UST team, Pauline is determined to pursue athletics with passion, promising that she will train harder to reach her goal.
“My target for my remaining playing year in USTHS is to get an athletic award. It will be one of my goals,” she said.
Sacrifice
For her, the athletic life is serious, not something people do just for fun.
“One must learn to sacrifice and push limits to do better. This is the life I chose and striving harder is how I push myself to be better. It’s not easy, but I love it because I know it will be worth it in the end,” she said.
Long hours of training can be exhausting, but she doesn’t show any signs of fatigue.
“Giving up is not an option. The only option for an athlete is to try harder, do better and achieve more,” she pointed out.
Just for fun
But with her height and attractive facial features, Pauline didn’t have difficulty entering the world of fashion. She started modeling at age 14. She never had professional model training, except a few things she learned from her mother. She looked up to supermodels Danica Magpantay and Cara Delevingne. Joining the Penshoppe Holiday 2012 show was the most memorable among her fashion experiences. She narrated how people at the casting call were impressed when they found out that she was only 15 years old. “Walking for Penshoppe was great. When I got a phone call saying that I got in, I felt really happy. For me, it meant that they saw a potential in me, that’s why they put me in the show,” she recounted.
Aside from Penshoppe, Pauline has also modeled in the last two seasons of Philippine Fashion Week for designers Albert Andrada, Norman Noriega, Jerome Salaya Ang, Xernan Orticio, Raoul Ramirez and Audie Espino, among others.
But Pauline said that modeling for her is just for fun. She does not consider it a real job. Asked if she has plans to keep modeling as long as she enjoys it, she said that she had yet to decide.
Priorities
But one great thing about Pauline is that she juggles everything perfectly. Extracurricular activities do not prevent her from attaining the highest grade point average in her class.
“It is important for me to know my priorities. Even though I’m an athlete, I know that academics should and must always come first,” she said.
Pauline added that, even during exam week, she is required to train with the volleyball team. But she always find time to study despite her very busy schedule.
Sometimes she just wants to sleep or be engrossed in social media. “But I can’t do those things. I always wonder why I hear my classmates complain about not having time to study, when I’m able to do that and still do training,” she said.
But as far as priorities are concerned, it’s studies first before sport. She said volleyball and other stuff will always be there, but academics was something that must be finished above anything else.
Dreams
In the future she wants to become a teacher. Her interest in education started when she interacted with her cousin who had autism. “I want to invest in building the future of young people,” Pauline said.
For her, success in life comes with humility, passion and motivation.
“Athletes should explore many things, strive harder and focus. If you dream, don’t let it just be a dream, make it happen. And while you’re young, you are responsible for making your dreams happen. In order for that to happen, you must believe in yourself,” she said.

Miss Philippines is first runner-up in Miss Universe tilt
MANILA, Philippines – Crowd favorite Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon settled for first runner-up as Miss USA Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe 2012 in the tense-filled beauty pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila).
Filipinos rejoiced as the country made history with triple back-to-back honors for the country in the Miss Universe contest. In 2010, Ma. Venus Raj won fourth runner-up honors, followed by Shamcey Supsup’s third runner-up honors last year.
Tugonon, 23, of Balanga, Bataan, impressed the judges with her answer to a tweeter question during the final interview read by famed photographer Nigel Barker. “As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English is a prerequisite to being Miss Universe? Why or why not?”
“For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing a specific language. She should be able to influence and inspire other people. Whatever language you have, as long as your heart wants to serve the people, and you have a strong mind, then you can be Miss Universe,” answered Tugonon, as the crowd, composed of many Filipinos, cheered her answer.
Despite the inspiring answer, the judges gave the crown to Culpo, 20, of Rhode Island. She is into cello, movies, museums, concerts, and making people laugh. Culpo added that she hopes to land a career in either film or television.
“The perfect way to end the year.”
This was how Vice President Jejomar C. Binay described the 1st runner-up finish of Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Janine Tugonon in the Miss Universe 2012 pageant.
“Ms. Janine Tugonon, by winning 1st runner up in the Miss Universe pageant, held up the country’s banner and showed the world, once again, the grace, sophistication, and beauty that Filipinas possess,” Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a statement yesterday
After the pageant, Tugonon thank her supporters through her Tweeter account. “Maraming-maraming salamat po sa mga nanood kanina. Iba talaga ang Pinoy. Grabe! Mahal ko kayo.”
Culpo’s question was read by Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarette. “What is something you have done that you would never do again?”
She said, “Every experience, no matter what it is, good or bad, you will learn from it. But something I would never do again would be picking up with my siblings. But I don’t regret it.”
Other winners were Miss Venezuela Irene Esser, second runner-up; Miss Australia, Renee Ayris, third runner-up. and Miss Brazil, Gabriela Markus, fourth runner up. Other candidates who made the Top 16 semifinals were representatives from Turkey, France, Peru, Russia, Mexico, Poland, Hungary, South Africa, Croatia, Kosovo, and India.
Many Filipinos, glued to the live telecast of the much-awaited beauty contest, were both excited and disappointed. They felt a similar tension-filled scenario when Miss Philippines Miriam Quiambao was up against Miss Botswana Mpule Kwelagobe, who eventually became Miss Universe, in the pageant held in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999.
It was a long journey for Tugonon in the Miss Universe beauty contest. In 2011, Tugonon joined the Bb. Pilipinas beauty contest, won by Supsup. Then early this year, she made a last minute-decision to join the Bb. Pilipinas beauty contest and in April, she earned the right to represent the Philippines in the 61st Miss Universe beauty contest.
Tugonon, a cum laude Pharmacy graduate at the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila, endured seven months of preparations after the schedule of the beauty pageant was moved during the holidays. Prior to her stint in Bb Pilipinas, Tugonon was UST’s 2009 Miss Pharmacy and 2010 Miss Thomasian Personality, or popularly known as Miss UST. She is also a former ballerina.
From current events to her signature “cobra walk,” Tugonon earned confidence on her journey to the Miss Universe contest, already won twice by Philippines – Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.
“Ang masasabi ko, siguro ang nagbago sa akin, mula ng nag-train ako, is ‘yung nagkaroon na ako ng confidence. ‘Yun ang malaking pinag-bago sa akin,” Tugonon said.
She also believes that it is high time for the Philippines to win its third crown in the Miss Universe pageant, saying that Filipinos are strong and determined. “Filipinos should be recognized for their determination and strength. The Filipino women are strong and determined and they deserve to be Miss Universe.”
Despite winning the Miss Universe pageant last night, Tugonon’s friends and supporters believe that she is both sad and happy for her triumph, noting that her boyfriend is in the country.
Days before she left for the Miss Universe contest, Tugonon said she will miss her boyfriend Jaypee Santos. “Hindi na-approve ang visa n’ya, it was denied. Sayang. Ma-mi miss ko s’ya.” Her family and friends went to the US to cheer for Tugonon, except her boyfriend.
Tugonon has only sweet words for her boyfriend of eight months, who is waiting for him in the Philippines, as he celebrated their “month-sary” as sweethearts alone yesterday. “I love you! Don’t worry. I’ll come back!”
Tugonon said that she and her boyfriend met at a pharmaceutical company where they worked. She also said that her boyfriend helped her prepare for the Miss Universe pageant through daily exercises.
Her mentor, Jonas Antonio Gaffud, expressed his frustration on the results of the competition through tweets. “I’m sorry! So devastated! We worked hard for this! But as my prayer goes: I will be grateful to God no matter what. I just wanted that crown so badly for my country : (“
In the video interview for the Top 10 finalists, Tugonon said that Filipinos love Miss Universe. “I think the crown will be the best Christmas gift for the Filipinos this coming Dec. 25.”
Tugonon passed the 2010 Pharmacy Board Exam with a score of 82.05 percent. In high school, she was awarded Best in English. (With reports from Madel S. Namit and JC Bello Ruiz)

Philippine bet is Miss Universe first runner-up
MANILA, Philippines – Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon won the first runner-up in the Miss Universe beauty pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada Thursday.

During the question and answer portion, Tugonon was asked “Do you believe that speaking English should be prerequisite for Miss Universe 2012?”
Tugonon answered: “For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. It’s about being able to influence and inspire other people.”
“If you have a heart to serve and a strong mind to show people then you can be Miss Universe,” Tugonon said.
The final five was chosen after the evening gown portion.

Gloria Diaz on why Miss USA won crown
MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz said it does not matter that Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon did not clinch the crown during the Miss Universe 2012 pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila). Speaking to radio dzMM, Diaz said what's more important is what she intends to do after the international competition.
“Panapanahon lang iyan, sabi nga nila. They were all gorgeous, each one. Some like white, some like black, some like brown. Let me tell you once and for all, it doesn't matter whether you win or you lose. It's what you do after,” she said.
Diaz, the first Filipina to bring home the Miss Universe crown, noted that there have been beauty queens who simply quietly faded away after winning, as well as runners up who have capitalized on their exposure.
Asked if she thinks the judges really make a big difference, Diaz said: “No, not really. Because even the judges themselves do not know who they want. Even in the last minute, papalit-palit din 'yan, pabura-bura. You are confronted with 85 women. You don't know eh, kanya kanya ‘yan eh. It's just fate.”
Miss USA vs Miss Philippines
Meanwhile, Diaz shared why she thought Miss USA Olivia Culpo won the competition.
“You can see na we all identify with [her answer]. Sometimes it's not necessarily the smartest or the wittiest. Sometimes, it's the most acceptable,” she said.
During the competition, Miss USA was asked to name one thing she would never do again. "Picking on my siblings growing up," she replied.
Nonetheless, Diaz praised Tugonon's performance during the question and answer portion.
“I just thought she was gorgeous and she gave a very good answer. Sabi ko ito na iyon. That's the way that I felt about Venus (Raj, 2010 Miss Universe fourth runner up), Shamcey (Supsup, 2011 Miss Universe third runner up) and Miriam (Quiambao, 1999 Miss Universe first runner up). Parang there was no other choice,” she said.
Diaz said most Filipinos would definitely have the same reaction whoever would have won the competition other than Miss Philippines.
“We would all felt shortchanged. Basta never mind, she's still a winner to us. We love our beauty queens. First runner up, that's really something. Like I said, what she will do after is the most important,” she said.

Janine Tugonon in Miss Universe Q&A portion
MANILA, Philippines - Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2012 Janine Tugonon is only one answer away from getting the country's third Miss Universe crown.
The 61st Miss Universe coronation night, held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila), is hosted by Andy Cohen, Bravo's executive vice president of development and talent, and entertainment journalist and fashion and beauty expert Giuliana Rancic.
The Filipina beauty, who is part of the pageant's Top 5, was given a Twitter question from judge Nigel Barker: "As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English should be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe? Why or why not?"
She answered: "For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. It's being able to influence and inspire other people. As long as your heart wants to serve and you have a strong mind to show people, then you can be Miss Universe."
Dubbed as an "early favorite," Tugonon has appeared in several pre-pageant activities such as TV guestings on talk shows.

UST cheers Janine Tugonon, Pharmacy alumna, for Miss Universe feat
20 December 2012, 11:28 p.m. - THE THOMASIAN community on Thursday cheered Pharmacy alumna Janine Tugonon for her runner-up finish in the 2012 Miss Universe pageant.
While Tugonon lost the crown to the United States' Olivia Culpo, she is the "real Miss Universe" in the hearts of Thomasians, UST officials said.
"She makes us proud as Thomasians and as Filipinos," Secretary General Fr. Winston Cabading, O.P. told the Varsitarian.
Public Affairs chief Giovanna Fontanilla said: "She showed to the world how a Thomasian is truly elegant. She is my Miss Universe."
In the Q&A portion, Tugonon was asked by pageant judge Nigel Barker to answer a question posted on Twitter, which read: “As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English is a prerequisite to being Miss Universe? Why or why not?”
The Filipina crowd favorite answered: “For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing a specific language. She should be able to influence and inspire other people. Whatever language you have, as long as your heart wants to serve the people, and you have a strong mind, then you can be Miss Universe.”
Olivia Culpo, meanwhile, was asked whether she ever regretted something she had done.
"I'd like to start off by saying that every experience no matter what it is, good or bad, you'll learn from it. That's just life," the 20-year-old Boston University student said. "But something I've done I've regretted is probably picking on my siblings growing up, because you appreciate them so much more as you grow older."
Tugonon, who represented the Philippines in the 61st edition of Miss Universe in Las Vegas, Nevada, beat 87 other candidates, but fell short to Culpo, who hails from Rhode Island. Culpo succeeded Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes of Angola.
Completing the top five were Irene Sofia Esser (Venezuela), Ranae Ayris (Australia), and Gabriela Markus (Brazil) in the third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively.
Tugonon graduated cum laude from the Faculty of Pharmacy in 2010. She was crowned Miss Pharmacy in 2009 and won as Miss UST in The Search for the Ideal Thomasian Personality (TSITP) in 2010.
“She is a guiding symbol to all the candidates of TSITP. In one way or another, I know TSITP helped her shape her personality,” said Benjo Ravanera, president of the Student Organizations’ Coordinating Council, lead organizer of the annual University-wide personality search.
Plans are afoot for homecoming celebrations in UST for Tugonon.
Tugonon’s Miss Universe feat is the best finish for the country since 1999, when UST Physical Therapy graduate Miriam Quiambao emerged as first runner-up to Botswana's Mpule Kwelaglobe.
Tugonon's runner-up title is the third in a row for the Philippines. Venus Raj, a graduate of Bicol University, won the fifth spot in 2010, while University of the Philippines architecture graduate Shamcey Supsup won third runner-up at last year’s pageant in Brazil.
Tugonon was the only Asian who made it to this year's top 10. She was joined by candidates from Australia, Russia, Brazil, France, Venezuela, the United States, Hungary, South Africa, and Mexico. Janine Tugonon returns; fans cheer By Armin Adina Philippine Daily Inquirer
For a beauty queen, winning the Miss Universe crown would have been everything. Not for Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon.
“If winning the crown will give them hope and happiness, let’s give them that,” she said on arriving in Manila yesterday a week after the American contestant Olivia Culpo narrowly beat her for the title in the pageant held in Las Vegas, USA.
“The US is pitiful these days because of the tragedies [they suffered],” Tugonon said, referring to the Dec. 14 killing of 20 schoolchildren and six adults in an elementary school in Connecticut and the devastation wrought on the US East Coast by Hurricane “Sandy” in October.
“I think we should be happy, we should be thankful. When I was there, the environment was very sad. So if the Miss Universe crown will make them happy, then it’s okay, they really need it.”
The 5-foot-8-tall beauty said winning the first runner-up honors was already a huge blessing.
At a press conference at Gateway Suites in Quezon City, Tugonon described Culpo, a 20-year-old university student, as a “really nice person.” It was the eighth time the United States had won the Miss Universe title.
Pageant fans online have been flooding social networking sites with remarks declaring Tugonon the true winner based on her answer to a question during the pageant.
‘Judging is subjective’
Judge Nigel Barker asked Tugonon if a Miss Universe winner should be required to speak English. She said it was not about learning a language but being an influence to others and having a heart that’s ready to serve.
Tugonon said she believed she gave a decent answer. But she said “judging is not solely based on that alone. I remember my uncle told me that ‘judging is subjective,’ so however great your answer may be, the judges may like another response more.”
“There are really several factors, including the way you walk on stage,” she added.
Tugonon revealed that after the coronation night held at Planet Hollywood Casino, she spoke with most of the other contestants who, she said, told her, “We know [the winner] was supposed to be you, and you know it should have been you.”
Special attention
Her roommate from Indonesia shed tears when she made the cut. “She was so happy for me, she’s a really nice person,” Tugonon said.
She said that after the ceremonies, three of the male judges, including Barker, approached her, shook her hand and told her, “You are gorgeous!”
She also said she felt she got special attention while she was in Las Vegas.
At first, Tugonon said she did not give much credit when she was chosen to shoot a campaign for Chi hair products—a pageant sponsor—together with the entry from the Cayman Islands.
But she somehow felt special when she was again included for a special shoot for Australian Gold sun tan lotion with a select group of candidates.
When she appeared on a talk show for Fox 5 with Culpo, she knew it was a favorable development.
“I thought to myself, ‘Hmmm, only Miss USA and me? That must be something!’” Tugonon said.
Despite her accomplishment, Tugonon said there was no reason to brag.
“If you think about it, I was not the only one who exerted effort and brought me to where I am now … There were a lot of people involved. The Lord was immensely involved in all this,” she said.
Tugonon was cheered by fans on her arrival at the airport at around 6 a.m. on Philippine Airlines flight PR-107.
She told airport reporters she was very thankful for the support of all Filipinos.
“Even the organizers were surprised why there were so many Filipinos there [in Las Vegas],” she said.
Tugonon arrived with her sister. Their mother chose to stay behind in Las Vegas.
Among those waiting at the airport was Tugonon’s boyfriend, Jaypee Santos, who waited in a van outside the arrival area.
Show biz beckons
She said she had no ill feelings at not winning the crown.
“For me, judging is subjective, right?” she added. “Of course, judges have different likes. But what’s important is that I did my best.”
Of her plans, she said she was open to a career in show biz although she said she was considering to take post-graduate studies.
Tugonon’s first runner-up finish came with a $3,000 prize which she said she would use to help pay for a house she recently bought. She also plans to go on a vacation with her loved ones in Palawan.
Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) chair Stella Marquez-Araneta said five endorsement contracts were already being offered to Tugonon and they expected more would come.
BPCI has lined up a series of appearances on television for Tugonon. A motorcade and a courtesy call on President Aquino are also expected to take place soon.
Tugonon’s second place finish also marked the third straight year that the Philippines cracked the Top 5 in the Miss Universe pageant, following Venus Raj’s fifth place finish in 2010 and Shamcey Supsup’s fourth place finish last year.
The Philippines has two Miss Universe winners: Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973. In 1999, Miriam Quiambao won first runner-up. With a report from Jerome Aning

Janine Tugonon answers other Top 5 questions ABS-CBNnews.com
Tugonon: 'I claim victory'
MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe 2012 first runner-up Janine Tugonon got a chance to answer the other four questions asked during the much talked about question and answer portion of the pageant last week.
Tugonon won raves from fans and pageant observers for her answer to the question posed to her by judge, fashion photographer Nigel Barker, on whether speaking English should be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe.
She answered: "For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. It's being able to influence and inspire other people. As long as your heart wants to serve and you have a strong mind to show people, then you can be Miss Universe."
But in a one-on-one interview with “The Buzz” host Boy Abunda that aired on Sunday, the 23-year-old University of Sto. Tomas graduate was asked to answer the other questions posed to the other Top 5 candidates.
1. If you could make a new law, what would it be and why? (asked to Miss Venezuela Irene Sofía Esser Quintero, who was second runner-up).
Tugonon: “It would be something that would oblige the parents to nurture their children, to let them go to school, to take care of them. So that we won’t just make babies, we would be responsible parents.”
2. As someone who might be winning a modeling contract, what would you feel if you were told to lose weight or risk losing the assignment? (asked to Miss Australia Renae Ayris, third runner-up)
Tugonon: “For me, if it’s in the contract, then we must follow. We’ve entered that contract so you must follow all the rules in it. It’s a sacrifice, really.”
3. What do you say to people who believe wearing swimsuits in public reduces them to sexual objects? (asked to Miss Brazil Gabriela Markus, fourth runner-up).
Tugonon: “For me wearing a swimsuit is not only to flaunt your body, it also shows the people that you can be confident, you could be graceful in a two-piece. And I don’t think that’s disrespectful.”
4. What is something that you have done that you will never do again? (asked to Miss USA Olivia Culpo, Miss Universe 2012)
Tugonon: “When my grandmother died, I wasn’t able to say goodbye to her. So I would make the most of every second I have.”
Nervous during pageant
Despite the confidence she projected during the pageant, Tugonon admitted to Abunda that she was nervous during the question and answer portion.
“Kabado ako kasi hindi ako magaling mag-English talaga,” she confessed.
But she was also energized by the crowd, who were very vocal about their support for her. “Lalo pa kapag naglalakad. Sobrang nakadagdag siya ng confidence, nakadagdag siya ng smile for me. Mas lalo mong ma-fi-feel talaga yung lakad mo,” she said.
So when she was the last one to be called for the Top 10, she was jittery. “Kinakabahan ako siyempre. Pero sinansabi ko, hindi, Lord, sabi ko pasok ako. Alam ko pasok ako, hindi pwedeng hindi,” she recalled, laughing.
Tugonon admitted that she “claimed” to win the crown in her prayers. “I prayed, “Lord, I claim victory. I claim to be the next Miss Universe” …pero siyempre nandun pa rin sa dulo na it’s Your will,” she told Abunda, adding that her praised “cobra walk” was dedicated to God.
Every time she had to walk across the stage, she would pray and tell herself to “walk for Jesus.”
Asked of her immediate reaction when Miss USA was named Miss Universe, the 5-foot-8 Filipina replied, “Uwi na ako. Honestly yon talaga. Aba mukhang matutuwa ang mga friends ko sa Philippines na uuwi na ako.”
As such, she is hoping that the many Filipinos who are disappointed when she didn’t bring home the coveted crown would accept her defeat and just move on.
“Sana matanggap na nila ‘yung mga hindi pa nakakatanggap. Let’s be happy,” she said, adding that for herself, she is praying for all the blessings to continue.

‘I want to be like Naomi Campbell —hindi sa ugali ha,’ says this next top model #NOFILTER By Chonx Tibajia (The Philippine Star) | Updated January 15, 2014 - 12:00am
Asia’s Next Top Model finalist Jodilly Pendre refers to herself in third person — a disarmingly charming nuance that only someone with her childlike energy can pull off. She says she’s 5’10”, but with her lithe frame and the day’s fluorescent pink heels, she looks about 10 feet tall, and with the presence to match. Her Filipina features are made slightly oriental by her fresh new ‘do, a shoulder-length bob with full China girl bangs courtesy of Tresemmé’s Lourd Ramos, who is also a guest judge and beauty specialist for ANTM Cycle 2. It flatters her jutting cheekbones just right. She looks every inch a model now, a result of over a month’s worth of challenges, displacement, and immersion for the show.
It’s the day after the pilot episode of Cycle 2 aired and Jodilly appears nervous about our little interview. But experience has taught me that appearances can be deceiving and, true enough, as soon as we begin, she opens up like I am an old friend, entrusting with me every juicy detail she is allowed to divulge about her life before the show and the dramatic change of pace that came with living in the model house.
“I like to observe people, how they react to what I say, how they react to things around them. That’s how I know if we will get along,” she tells me, and I respond by awkwardly darting my eyes around the room. Is she sizing me up right now? This kind of confidence and nerve to withdraw from the world before selectively diving right in is rare and powerful in a 20-something. What did they feed them at the model house? I ask myself. She jolts me from a brewing inner monologue when she says, “Jodilly is the quiet one.” Third person. “I think that is my asset,” she laughs. “It can be really crazy in the model house. Sometimes you want to sleep, but the other girls are still wide awake. And then there’s the singing! Someone is always singing!” The singing, though, was one of her slighter worries. “When some of the girls would fight, I would just be in some corner hugging my stuffed toy thinking, ‘Talaga bang nangyayari ‘to?”
Jodilly has been a working model most of her college life, booking top ramp shows on top of her already impressive portfolio. She just graduated last April with a degree in Information Technology at University of Santo Tomas. She is the youngest among three siblings and is the breadwinner of the family. (“My brother always asks me for money!” she jokes.) She has always been told that modeling is a waste of her education. “But I always knew that modeling is what I really wanted to do. I love IT, but I honestly can’t imagine myself as a computer programmer 10 years from now,” she says with a laugh.
“I want to be like Naomi Campbell — hindi sa ugali, ha. I want to be able to say ‘I won’t get out of bed for less than P50,000, or whatever, a day. I’m claiming that.”
She’s serious, too. So serious that she has this on her vision board, which she keeps at home, along with other things she wants, like cutouts of Lebron, Jordan and Kobe sneakers (“When I have the money, bibilhin ko talaga ‘yan!”), as well as Hermés and Gucci ads (“I don’t want the items; I want to be the girl in the ad!”)
It is with this will-driven positivity that Jodilly maneuvers through life. Her example is classic: “I am forever the commuter,” she says. “Minsan ‘pag wala nang masakyan, ‘pag wala nang jeep, imbis na mainis ako, iisipin ko ‘May darating na jeep. May darating na jeep.’ Tapos may darating nga.”
She says this is what kept her focused on her goals at the model house — through the crying of girls who have undergone drastic makeovers, through every challenge, through the ups and downs. “I can relate to girls who cry at makeover challenges. Kung buhok mo ‘yung asset mo, tapos puputilin? Iiyak ka talaga ‘nun. I can relate, but I don’t care. Hindi para intindihin ko pa ‘yung pag-iyak ng iba. The whole time, I was focused. There, you won’t even have time to miss your family. We were so busy.”
To Jodilly, her biggest challenge wasn’t the other girls, it was herself. “People say the girls fight because they want to be popular, they want air time, that they’re not really there to win. I never believed that. Of course they’re there to win. And so was I,” she says. Jodilly stayed focused on the challenges and improving after each one. “Some of the challenges really pushed me. Some required us to stay underwater, and I thought, ‘Ginagawa ba talaga ng model ‘to?’”
Being the keen observer that she is, Jodilly says she learned just as much about modeling from the girls as she did from the challenges. “I came to the house bringing my jeans and shirts and then I saw the girls with their dresses and high heels. That was when I realized I had to start looking the part. I didn’t have my own makeup, so I would borrow from the other models. I learned how to present myself as a model and own my look. I saw Brazilian models at the go-see and I had two choices: I could think I am never getting in because I looked so different, or believe that I will get in kasi ako yung nag-pursigi.”
But it’s one thing to compete against Brazilians and another to compete against another Filipina. I ask her how she felt about competing with fellow finalist Katarina Gonzales — if having another Filipina around changed her game. With a genuine glint of fondness for Katarina in her eyes, she says, “Having her around did not change my strategy. We’ve grown very close, I guess because we understand each other. We support each other. It was never about Team Jodilly or Team Katarina. For us, it was always Team Philippines.” She tells me how she would look to Katarina for support when she would rank a little lower at judging, how they would always help each other out.
Later on, after our interview, the two would share a four-tier grilled cheese sandwich with me and I just sat there, bemused by their banter. Katarina is training for track-and-field and is under a strict diet. She has a plastic tub in front of her, containing a meal that has been prescribed by nutritionist. “I can’t eat anything else kasi sayang naman what I paid for,” says Katarina. Meanwhile, Jodilly insists otherwise, “Ang sarap kaya,” pertaining to the sinfully cheesy sandwich.
It’s amazing how these young women have already claimed their spot in the modeling scene, and how they can snap out of it, just like that, and be goofy kids again. I find myself rooting for them both, there’s no way I can pick a favorite after meeting the two. With their talent, charm, ninja smizing skills, and salon-gorgeous hair (the winner of ANTM will also be the face of Tresemmé Asia), they can definitely conquer the Top Model. Only one thought came to mind after talking to Jodilly. In my head, I could hear Tyra banks telling them, “Gurrrl, you better werk!”
